This week a common theme at the store has been folks looking to continue planting and they're wondering what that looks like in Newfoundland! While our growing season may be short, there are still PLENTY of things you can grow in August.
Quick growing vegetables - August is a great time to plant vegetables that don't need a long growing season.
- Lettuce & Salad Greens - varieties that mature quickly like our Grand Rapids or our Ruby Salad Bowl varieties.
- Radishes - plant these directly in your garden and continue to sow a small amount every week or two for a continuous harvest - grab a package of our Sparklers for a great addition to any salad.
- Turnip - this is an excellent late season crop, turnips can grow fairly quickly, they have tasty greens and they handler the cooler temperatures very well.
🌿Herbs are easy to grow, even if your garden is full you can likely squeeze in a little more growing. Or even better, plant them in pots, you can move them when temperatures begin to drop and use them in your kitchen.
- Cilantro, parsley, dill and chives are great options - you can find plenty on our seed wall.
🌼Flowers - If you have empty spaces in your garden beds or containers that need a little colour, grab some quick growing annuals or get some perennials started!
- Think Zinnias, Marigolds and Nasturtiums are a great choice with their bright bold colours.
- Take a look for our Black Eyed Susan or Purple Coneflower varieties.
One of the best things about gardening is that there is ALWAYS something you can be doing!
Maybe you didn't get your garden started as early as you hoped this year - the weather sure didn't help! It certainly isn't too late - a few rows of lettuce, some radishes, herbs and turnip and you'll have yourself a great little harvest!
